| Torpedo Factory, Alexandria, Virginia |
One of our first projects involved recommending the reuse of an old Torpedo Factory (later used as a records storage warehouse) in Alexandria, Virginia, and transforming it into an Arts Center. The building is now a vibrant home to artists’ studios and a major tourist attraction. As part of the Alexandria, Virginia waterfront plan, Engin Artemel, at the time the City’s Planning Director, set the framework for a public-private partnership to redevelop a former industrial facility into a mixed-use redevelopment with offices, residences, an art center, and a retail arcade. The project anchors the King Street retail axis, and the art center is one of Virginia’s top tourist attractions.
